  • In the drink…instead of on it.

Swimming in the evening has been on the timetable for the last week or two. It does raise the question however; why do certain women insist on wearing makeup to the beach? Possibly the connection between close proximity to water, and ‘fishing’ if one had to proffer a guess. Otherwise, it’s been pretty damn good; no clouds, the water is the perfect temperature, and beautiful views…

  • I was not happy with the rain, and overcast days…

…so the world responded. The last few days have been scorchers, with a great deal of humidity thrown in. We’ve meant to go swimming, but the heat means that we just can’t gather the strength to do so. Such a catch-22.

  • Honest Joe

I had this sent to me from a friend in Australia. I like the guy’s approach – he does have transferable skills which would serve well in legal endeavours.

    Work Wanted

  • My gift to you.

For friends and family who do step into the light, feel the warmth, and choose a Mac – I’m offering free support. Happily. Without duress.

If you decide to buy a Mac, I’ll help you choose the right one, pay the right price, and help set it up. Of course, this will involve me sitting and watching for the 10 minutes it will take you to enter your details, and get on the internet. Any questions regarding software, hardware, and usage I’ll also gladly help with. No offers of daughters, sisters, caribbean holidays, cash bribes, or Wild Turkey necessary. Although I will accepts gifts of gratitude of the latter.

Comments are back on; any questions; ask.

  • Late Christmas Pressies

Here. I was watching the announcements as they were made, and to see the new MacBook Pro (ugh – I hope the person who named it doesn’t have children – for their sake) and iMac appear was great. I’ve since resisted the urge to order one of each straight away – I’ll wait for the revision B. release, just in case something’s screwy with the first ones off the line.

Many people spend almost as much time working on their computer (or getting others to…) as they do working with their computer. With alternatives out there like Apples running Mac OS X, which look great, feel great, and just work, why would someone choose otherwise? The peace of mind about not having to worry about viruses, trojans, people trying to steal all the information from my computer, and knowing it’s not gradually going to run slower and slower, is a wonderful thing. Try one. You’ll love it.

  • 2005

Now that 2006 is well and truly here – in all it’s shining glory (or not if one is in Auckland – the old chook will attest to that) – time to reminisce over the year just departed. As such, as funny, momentous, poignant, or just plain weird moments come to mind, I’ll share them with you.

For now, I’ll start off with my birthday party, and the look on Phil’s face when in fact it was a pony :-p (one day when I can be stuffed typing, I’ll explain the story behind the pony)

  • Kiwi baches

What do you think of when reading the above?

For me, the kiwi bach is a ~3 bedroom smallish kinda house which had an outside hose/shower for getting the sand off, a 14″ or 21″ TV for the rugby, the old furniture from the family home, and wasn’t worth much more than the family car. If one was really lucky, there was also a water tank, and the constant reminders that water was scarce (hello – there’s an ocean full of the stuff right there!).

There was also a small to medium boat for fishing and other water activities, several packs of cards, and enough board games to keep the children of a small african nation occupied. How things have changed.

The ‘baches’ these days at Mount Maunganui, Pauanui, Waiheke Island, etc aren’t quite what they used to be. This has come up in conversation with a few people lately, but this was brought about by looking at the pics of the place friends bought at Pauanui; all 8 bedrooms, 3 floors, 2 LCD TVs, bar (ok – some change is good) 4 car garage, 4 1/2 bathrooms of it.

“Getting away from it all” doesn’t really seem to mean leaving that much of the comforts of home at home. However; I have found salvation. Between Christmas and New Years we went down to spend some time with Dad at Bowentown, which is just south of Waihi Beach.

It is still very much a coastal town with the houses and people one would expect to find in a typical NZ beach town of yore. There were real summer baches, tents, caravans, kids playing frisbee (yes – me!), people wandering all over the show making new friends, and everyone was really pleasant and nice.

    notes:

    1. Yes, we did have an LCD TV at Bowentown, but it wasn’t like a 42″ Sony.
    2. Yes, there was wireless internet at the Bowentown camping ground – darn wireless ISPs….
    3. Yes, I know those of you who’ve been down to Pauanui and The Mount with us in the past are laughing over your drinks right about now – but that was all for the purposes of research, you see!

  • 2006

Ana, Phil, Jeremy, Sarah, Adele, David, Liz, and myself graced the The Abbey in Greenlane with our presence (a change from Cesar’s), and the plan was to stay put for the whole night. This was of course the alternative to an idea Nicholas had about going to Fenton Circus with marquees and tables, a generator, lights, and a great many vessels of liquor. We’ll say no more about that.

Anyway, human nature kicked in (or something else in Jeremy kicked in…) and we traipsed across to SPQR in Ponsonby, and as with many decisions like this, we should have stayed put.

Who hasn’t gone out at some stage, and thought the grass was greener on the other side? There’s always going to be a night just a little better just down the road and around the corner – everyone has surely experienced this.

As for the ‘special moment’ at some arbitrary time someone looked at their watch and stated: “oh look – the new year”, and hugs and kisses and other forms of mutual admiration were passed around.

I think the highlight of the night was Marty’s phone call. He decided he was going to start afresh in 2006, and this included death by drowning for his cellphone. Of course, he could have waited to finish the call before carrying out this great symbolic gesture. Oops.

  • It’s that time again.

The time where a month has passed, and I feel I really should be adding to this blog.

Of course, 2 bourbons and an episode of SG-1 later; it’s gone! Err. The feeling that is.

  • It’s someone’s birthday today.

Someone special. Someone who puts up with me. Every day! As I said… Someone special.

I hope you enjoyed it, sweetie 🙂
